BENEFITS OF MUSICAL THEATRE
There are numerous benefits of joining a musical theatre program. At Queen’s Academy, we strive to teach our students teamwork, and help them to build confidence! We are a non-profit musical theatre program that supports children to develop life skills.
CONFIDENCE & SELF-PRESENTATION SKILLS
Queen’s Academy focuses on improving your child’s confidence and self-esteem. We teach and encourage children to present themselves in front of an audience without feeling nervous. Performing in front of an audience can help in many areas of life. In a supportive environment, the children begin by performing in front of peer, slowly increasing their comfort level and readiness to perform in front of family and friends.
Queen’s Academy also teaches children how to improvise. Improvisation fosters confidence and is a great tactic to encourage participation. We integrate improvisation into our program through inclusive games. This also supports creativity; boosting your child’s ability to think outside the box, adapt and establish resilience.
COMMUNICATION
Our secondary focus is to advance social interaction skills and communication. Queen’s Academy fosters mutual respect and teamwork. In a supportive environment, children will learn to listen, process and respond. These are valuable skills that can apply to many other aspects of your child’s life. Rehearsing for performances provides your child opportunity to practice attentiveness, listening, and memorization. If a line is fumbled during a performance, communication is essential to keep the scene going. This is where improvisation and team work come into play. Children will learn to support each other throughout the rehearsals and during the performance. Queen’s Academy cultivates respect, teamwork, and observational and interpretation skills which are all essential in order to communicate effectively.
TEAMWORK & COOPERATION
Queen’s Academy emphasizes the significance of working as a team. A successful Musical Theatre performance includes group effort. Your child will be offered the chance to relate their own ideas and engage in group discussions. During the rehearsal process children will learn patience and respect for one another. Queen’s Academy recognizes that each child is special and can contribute in their own unique way. Therefore, everyone is given the chance to share with others and learn from one another. This helps to foster a sense of pride and mutual respect. Teamwork is not always favored by students as it a can be challenging, but is certainly an essential life skill. The Performing Arts always requires teamwork, no matter the production size. There requires collaborating in; rehearsals, creation of sets, stage lighting, costume development, script comprehension, line memorization, cues, directing, time management, and cooperation throughout the process to finalize the end goal. Queen’s Academy compels your child to unite as a team, because the show will only succeed if everyone works together!
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Without practice most people (adults and children alike) can find themselves lacking in confidence. For some, speaking in public can be terrifying and for some it might even limit their opportunities. Here at Queen's Academy we focus on helping your child feel more comfortable performing in front of people. The stage gives your child the opportunity to experiment with vocal projection, characterization, emotions, and tap into their personal strength. We teach children to connect with their characters so that they can project the emotions in a way that is believable and helps the audience relate. Queen’s Academy hopes to provide each child with the rush of excitement that comes from stepping onto a stage. It is our dream that each child obtains the opportunity and sense of satisfaction that can be achieved when looking out into an audience who sit captivated by their performance. With confidence building we can help children reach their true potential.
KINESTHETIC LEARNING & CONCENTRATION
Musical theatre is an extra-curricular activity. We work in an informal setting stimulating the brain and breaking away from the typical classroom mold. We recognize that each child learns differently. Kinesthetic learning offers an alternative way of obtaining information. Musical theatre implements kinesthetic learning by applying physical interactive activities. The possibilities are endless when it comes to integrating movement into a game. At Queen’s Academy, students are involved in hands on activities to encourage enjoyable learning.
FLEXIBILTY
Throughout each session, a variety of musical theatre techniques will be applied to nurture flexibility, coordination, and control. Memorization of choreography, and lines, is a big facet of flexibility. Just like a muscle, your memory requires exercise. By applying improvisation into weekly practices, we are strengthening mental acuity.
Improvisation skills contribute to effective, fast-paced, listening and responding. Through fun group activities, children are compelled to resolve a fictional problem through the spontaneous creation of short scenes. Improvisation is an expertise that we use every day. Success depends on careful listening and spontaneity through creating new ideas and problem solving. At Queen’s Academy, we make it our priority to have your child practice and feel comfortable contributing their talents in a safe fun environment.
FRIENDSHIP
Performing arts relies on social relationships and interactions. Your child will make strong connections with those who share the same passion as they do. Musical theatre focuses on working together and places as much value on the journey as it does the end performance. The theatre environment nurtures friendship. Children at who take musical theatre classes will create an unbreakable bond while working together to achieve a common end goal. Friendships can bring so much joy and at Queen’s Academy we share gratitude for these precious moments that last a lifetime.
